FastLane is a set of networks that have been set up throughout Boscawen, Keppel and Vian accommodation blocks at Culdrose, allowing livers-in high speed internet access in their rooms.
Each block has a 2Mb broadband connection (2 in Boscawen to deal with the amount of traffic) which is then connected to a system of wireless access points. Any computer that has a wireless card can then access the system after being logged on by one of the administrators. Access is unlimited 24 hours a day 365 days a year.
The system is run by a committee that includes three system administrators/block representatives. These are all volunteers with full time jobs however so please understand that whilst we attempt to sort out problems as quickly as possible, its not always possible.
Firstly you must live at Culdrose and either own or borrow one of the system wireless access cards. You will need to contact your block rep to arrange a time to connect you to the network. If you need contact details please email me (including a work contact number) and I will send you the relevant details.
Your block rep with either issue you with a wireless card (if available) or look up the MAC address of the wireless card in your computer and add it to the network allowed list. You will then be able to access the network. Although some of the reps do set up your computer and problem solve for you (time permitting) please understand that this is not officially part of their job. Simillarly if you begin to experience problems and on investigation it is found to be your computer, it is not their responsibility to fix it. That said, they will endevour to help you when possible.
It is also very strongly advised that any computer that is being used on the FastLane network is equiped with both anti-virus software and a suitable firewall.
